So, I’ve done videos about the BEST movie monsters and the MOST UNDERRATED movie monsters of all time but sometimes a creature in a movie, all though it wouldn’t usually make a “best of list”.. It still manages to stand out to me personally for some reason.. Maybe nostalgia or maybe something more intangible.. But anyway for some reason, I remember watching them and loving them.. Hell I still watch them and still love them… So they aren’t the best, they aren’t the scariest, they aren’t the most underrated but for some reason, I think they deserve a video on this channel… Here are some of MY Favorite Movie Monsters of ALL TIME (well again, more or less from the 80’s)
Critters – After the success of gremlins, movie studios were in a rush to produce similar small movie monsters, but none did it better in my opinion than the ferocious fur balls known as the crites in 1986’s critters. This movie was an important part of my childhood and I still enjoy it to this day. It’s a perfect example of a B movie done right in pretty much every way. And the titular movie monsters do a great job of combining real scary situations with a bit of that 80’s cheese that this channel is built on. A great movie with some of my favorite movie monsters.
Munchies – This next movie also tried to cash in on the gremlins craze but may have missed the mark just a bit. They are certainly not as famous and not as universally loved as the critters but for me, they were really fun to watch and hold a nostalgic place in my heart. The Munchies from 1987’s movie of the same name. I don’t think I could make the argument that this movie is good in any way… It was obviously inspired by gremlins and critters but they went for more of a comedy or satire feel rather than trying to compete with the horror elements.. And I think that was a smart move. It’s not a great movie, but for me, the munchies themselves were fun to watch and deserve a mention on this channel.
Legend – All Monsters – This next movie has so many monsters in it that are perfectly done that I couldn’t just pick one… and it’s my channel so I can cheat and do whatever I want. so Instead of picking just one.. I choose EVERY monster in 1985’s Legend. I’ve talked about this movie in a few other videos but for good reason. The creature effects are amazing and nobody.. Nobody has done a better devil on film. You could argue that the movie has it’s issues but I don’t think anyone would disagree that these creatures look great and could be praised as works of art even if you’re not a fan of the film. I luckily did enjoy this movie and think the monsters deserve recognition on this list.
The Dark Overlords – I recently did a video praising this next movie even though most youtubers claim it’s terrible. I don’t agree with them at all but I’m a biased 80’s nerd so my opinion is maybe a bit unfair. Even if you could convince me that this movie is crap, It still contains one of my favorite movie monsters… That movie is 1986’s Howard the Duck and those monsters are the dark overlords of the universe. Alright, maybe the movie is a little rough and maybe the effects don’t hold up well but these creatures deserve some love. They’re cheesy, they’re dated, but they are some of my favorites!
Vermithrax Pejorative – Dragonslayer – This final movie monster actually made me sick to my stomach as a child.. It was so real … and even though this movie is the oldest one on the list, I would argue that it contains the most realistic creature on this countdown. That movie is Dragonslayer from 1981 and that monster is Vermithrax Pejorative. I think this movie was different from the rest because it made no effort to be fun and campy. It had a more realistic tone and took the subject matter seriously. And even though this dragon’s name is a little weird and hard to remember, the actual creature itself is burned into my brain. It’s an impressive feat for 1981 and one of my favorite movie monsters.
So do you agree with my list?.. I guess since these are just some of my personal favorites, there’s really no arguing it.. It’s just my opinion but I am interested to see if you agree with any of my picks? What were some movie monsters that you enjoyed that probably wouldn’t make it onto a best of list. What movie monsters made an impression on you that you think deserve some love?… Put your thoughts in the comments and don’t forget to like and subscribe and I will see you in the next one!
