3 ways horror movies have changed since the 1980s

The horror genre has changed dramatically over the last 40 years. Horror movies of today tend to feature much more complex themes, better graphics, and exceptionally unique plotlines. Here are a few key examples of ways that the genre has changed since the 1980s:

80s-HORROR

1. Special effects have improved dramatically

Not only can this change be attributed to stylistic choices that horror filmmakers make nowadays, but the type of special effects that are possible today plays a strong role in this. Modern horror films are capable of making use of computer animation, robotics, and other technologies that were not available in the 1980s. Furthermore, these technologies are expected to become increasingly advanced as years go on, which will lead to better and better graphics.

2. Abstract plotlines are now common

Horror films of the 1980s and before often featured simple scenarios, such as an alien invasion, poltergeist activity, or a serial killer. However, today’s horror movies often have unusual and sometimes difficult to understand themes, such as what we see in the movie Bird Box. In this film, there are supernatural entities that cause anyone who sees them to commit suicide. As a result, images of the entities themselves are never shown, and this means that the viewer does not know exactly what they are.

3. Film experts are divided on whether the genre has improved

While some film experts feel that the genre has entered a period of doldrums, many others feel that the genre features more interesting plotlines than ever. The special effects further enhance the quality of today’s horror films, which is another reason why a lot of film experts believe that the genre has dramatically changed for the better since the 1980s. Ultimately, the jury’s out. Why not leave your comments below?
