What sub-genres of horror were popular in the 1980s?

Since the 1980s, the public’s taste in horror movies has changed dramatically. While some of the popular themes of the 80s have persisted into the modern era, many of them have waned in popularity to a certain extent. These subgenres of horror were especially common during the 80s:

80s horror

1. Slasher movies

In most cases, slasher movies feature a deranged serial killer who tortures his victims and commits gruesome acts of violence. A few of these horror films have been loosely based on real cases, which makes for a much more spine-chilling viewing experience. Thankfully, most of them feature purely fictional plotlines.

While slasher movies were quite popular in the 1980s, they seem to be making somewhat of a comeback. Though, their popularity has not reached the levels that were seen during the 1980s. Here are a few examples of 1980s slasher films:

– A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
– Halloween II
– Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter

If you want to see a slasher film from the 21st century, these are a few of the best ones to pick:

– Axeman
– See No Evil 2
– Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines
– Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings

2. Horror movies involving exorcisms, demons, and the devil

While this genre of horror was most popular during the 1970s, it still was quite popular in the 80s, especially during the earlier part of the decade. These are a few good examples of horror movies from the 1980s that featured demonic themes:

– The Demons of Ludlow
– The Demon Murder Case
– The Devonsville Terror

3. Aliens

The Alien series included some of the most popular horror movies of the decade. The series is still quite popular today. In addition, there were many other horror films that featured themes of an alien invasion. Here are a few examples of alien horror films from the 1980s:

– The Thing
– Aliens
– Predator

4. Some horror films featured abstract themes

While they were not typical during the 1980s, there were a few horror films from the era that featured an abstract plotline. However, this subgenre has become much more popular during the 21st century. These are a few examples of abstract horror films from the 1980s and 21st century:
